Dulces exuviae, by Alonso Mudarra, beautifully sung there by Catherine King, accompanied on the vihuela by Jacob Heringman, on an outstanding new ASV 70-minute taster of this highly sophisticated composer. Most of the songs are lugubrious, but Catherine King manages to vary the moods within this constraint.

Good as she is, however, the star of the disc is Jacob Heringman, who, in addition to accompanying, plays eleven solo pieces on the vihuela, and six on the slightly less intimate four-course guitar. He's master of the style and his instruments, as this fascinating imitation of the king of Spains court harper demonstrates, with its positively modern tonal shifts and passing dissonances.
